Market Analysis
XAU/USD.
Gold opened the SAST session at 4,021.72, peaked at 4,026.26 and then unwound steadily through European hours: 3,998.61 at 10:00, 3,966.75 at 13:00 and 3,934.71 by 15:00, a 2.17 per cent loss and a fresh 52-week low at 3,933.14. The driver is unchanged from the morning: resilient US growth and firmer PCE inflation have entrenched December hike pricing near 80 per cent, with the ten-year yield around 5 per cent raising the carry cost of bullion, and a risk-off equity tone offering no offset. Price trades below the 20-, 50-, 100- and 200-day averages, the MACD histogram is widening negative and the 3,945 objective has been achieved. Daily RSI at 31.6 is the sole caution; month-end rebalancing can force a short-covering bounce. No further medium or high-impact US data in the window.
USD/ZAR.
The rand opened steady near 16.6184 and weakened in stages: 16.6529 by 09:00, a brief retracement to 16.6319, then a decisive push to 16.6926 at 15:00, just under the session high of 16.6951 and the 20-day high at 16.7036. SARS reported a September trade surplus of ZAR 19.8 billion, the widest since March on a 5.1 per cent rise in exports, but the print proved a non-event against a dollar underpinned by December hike pricing. Gold's 2 per cent fall erodes a key terms-of-trade support, while next week's local government elections add a domestic risk premium. The morning's bullish call held and its 16.695 target was effectively met. Trend, momentum and fundamentals align; a close above 16.7036 opens the mid-16.80s. Month-end fixing flow is the main two-way risk.

One theme still governs both books: a repriced Fed path that keeps the dollar and front-end yields bid into month-end. Gold has confirmed the morning's bearish call by losing 4,000 and the 20-day low, and that loss of terms-of-trade support is feeding directly into USD/ZAR, which is pressing the top of its 20-day range despite a six-month-high trade surplus. Into the New York close we favour selling gold rallies toward 4,006 and holding long USD/ZAR against 16.6030, with month-end rebalancing the main source of counter-trend noise in the final hours.
